International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN), whose main objective is to promote the development of rural areas of the peoples of the world, with emphasis on the agricultural sector. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) was founded in December 1977. Its Constitutive Treaty was approved by the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of an International Fund for Agricultural Development, on June 13, 1976, held in Rome. . The Treaty Establishing IFAD provides that: “The objective of the Fund shall be to mobilize additional financial resources made available on concessional terms to promote agriculture in developing Member States. To achieve this goal, the Fund will primarily finance projects and programs expressly intended to initiate, expand or improve food production systems and strengthen policies and institutions within the framework of national priorities and strategies, taking into account: the need to increase food production in the poorest countries with food deficits; the potential for increased production in other developing countries; the importance of improving the level of nutrition of the poorest populations in developing countries, as well as their living conditions ”. IFAD's headquarters are in Rome, Italy.
