Secretary-General convenes 'no nonsense' climate change summit

El General secretary of the United Nations once again urged on Monday leaders from all spheres of society to take credible measures to mitigate climate change, stating that current plans are insufficient to deal with the existential threat posed by global warming.

In his end-of-year press conference, António Guterres reviewed a wide variety of topics, including climate change and the war in Ukraine.

Regarding the first, Guterres recognized that the phenomenon is one of the issues in which good news is scarce, with the global emissions rising and the world moving away from the objective of limiting the temperature increase to 1,5º C by the end of the century.

"National climate plans are falling woefully short”, he warned, although he acknowledged that some important provisions have been made to move from coal-based energy to a renewable energy model.

He added that all countries must make an extra effort to reduce their own carbon emissions in this decade and to support nations that cannot do it on their own.

In this context, Guterres announced that he will convene a Climate Ambition Summit in September 2023.

“I call on all leaders to step up: governments, businesses, cities and regions, civil society and finance. They should come with a new, tangible and credible climate action to accelerate the pace of change,” he said.

He explained that it is an open invitation, but clarified that it has an access price: "And that price is not negotiable: New, serious, credible climate action and nature-based solutions must be presented that move the needle forward and respond to the urgency of the climate crisis.”

“It will be a no nonsense summit. Without exceptions. No compromises. There will be no room for retractors, green facelifts, or repackaging of old commitments," she assured.
