World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is one of the specialized bodies of the United Nations, whose purpose is the promotion of tourism. Its origin dates from the creation of the International Union of Official Tourism Propaganda Organizations (UIO-OPT) in 1925, but which later changed its name to the International Union of Official Tourism Organizations (UIOOT), and in 1974 it adopted the name of World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Its Constitutive Treaty highlights among its purposes the following: «The fundamental objective of the Organization will be the promotion and development of tourism with a view to contributing to economic development, international understanding, peace, prosperity and universal respect, and the observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion. The Organization will take all appropriate measures to achieve this objective. ' Likewise, the 2003 Agreement between the UNWTO and the UN establishes the following: «The United Nations recognizes the World Tourism Organization as a specialized agency of the United Nations in charge of adopting the measures that are appropriate in accordance with its Statutes for the achievement of the objectives stated in them ”. Its headquarters are in Madrid, Spain.
