US bombing of Yemen increases the risk of further regional escalation

On April 17 and 18, the United States bombed the Yemeni port of Ra's Isa and its surroundings, leaving About 74 civilians were killed and more than 170 were injured, including five humanitarian workers, according to press reports.

In addition to the casualties, the airstrikes significantly damaged Yemen's port infrastructure, with possible oil spills.

Ra's Isa is a oil terminal located about 50 kilometers north of the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

António Guterres expresses great concern

El Secretary General of the UN expressed great concern about the bombings and reported that the Organization has mobilized humanitarian assistance to support nearby health centers.

In a statement, António Guterres also expressed deep concern about the continued missile and drone attacks carried out by the Houthis against Israel and in the Red Sea, and urges them to cease such aggressions immediately.

Similarly, he stressed that resolution 2768 (2025) of the Security Council, concerning Houthi attacks on merchant vessels, should fully respect each other.

Guterres recalled that international law, including international humanitarian law, as applicable, must be complied with at all times and called on all concerned to respect and protect civilians, as well as civil infrastructure.

Risk of regional escalation

The Secretary-General also warned once again of the risk of a largest escalation in the region and urged all actors to act with the utmost restraint.

The Secretary-General also again called on the immediate and unconditional release of all personnel of the United Nations and other organizations who has been arbitrarily detained by the Houthis.
