El Secretary General of the UN congratulated this Monday the Venezuelan people for the determination shown to peacefully express their will through the ballot boxes in the presidential elections held yesterday.
António Guterres' spokesperson said today in his regular meeting with the press that the UN has taken note of the announcement made by the electoral authorities, "as well as the concerns expressed by political actors and members of the international community."
Stephan Duharric conveyed Guterres' call for full transparency and urged the timely publication of election results and a breakdown by polling stations.
Exhortation to opt for peaceful ways
“The Secretary General trusts that all electoral disputes are addressed and resolved peacefully and urges all Venezuelan political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint,” the spokesperson stressed.
Likewise, he recalled that the electoral authorities must carry out their work in a manner independent and without interference “to guarantee the free expression of the will of the electorate.”
Official results
The National Electoral Council of Venezuela declared the current president of the country, Nicolás Maduro, winner of the elections with 51% of the votes. The opponent of the largest opposition bloc, Edmundo González, officially obtained 44% of the votes.
According to these results, Maduro will lead the country during the period 2025-2031, serving his third consecutive term.
La opposition did not know the results alleging fraud. There have also been protests from some sectors of the population.
As for the international community, a series of countries have questioned the results, calling for a new count and other nations recognize the president as the winner of the elections.
